WILLIAM MITCHELL | JANE MARSHALL BURNET

William Mitchell, Railway Clerk, youngest son of Jacob and Mary Mitchell, married Jane Marshall Burnet at South Bridge Street, Bathgate, West Lothian, on April 27th, 1882. Both were aged 23 years. Their marriage was witnessed by Isabella Leishman.

Jane was the daughter of Walter Burnet and Jean (Jane) Marshall, married (or proclaimed) June 4th, 1858, at Bathgate. There Jane was born on February 13th, 1859. At the time of her marriage, Jane's mother was deceased.

Jane had a number of Marshall cousins living in Blackburn, West Lothian.

Jane's father, Walter, came from Stirlingshire. His parents were Daniel Burnet and Elisabeth Connal of Gargunnock. Jane's mother, Jean Marshall, had had several children by a previous marriage. The 1861 census shows, in addition to 2-year old Jane, an older half brother named Alexander Donaldson, aged 13.

In the 1891 Census for Denny (Stirling), the William Mitchell family were located at Wellstrand, just west of the town centre. District 3; p.21 No.113 in Schedule. They were listed as: William Mitchell aged 32, employed as a 'contractor', Jane Marshall Burnett aged 31, Jane aged 8, Jacob had died and therefore did NOT appear in the Census, Mary Crosby aged 4, Christina Bruce aged 3 and Williamina Marshall aged 5 months.

William and Jane's first daughter, Jane, was born at Lumley Street, Grangemouth followed by the birth of their first son Jacob the following year. William's occupation at this time was Railway Inspector. The next two children, Mary and Christina, were born in Kilwinning where William was now working as a Cashier. By 1890, the family were living at Logan's Buildings, Denny and it was here their youngest daughter, Williamina, was born. William's occupation was now that of a Contractor. Their young son, William Alexander, was born in the District of Govan in 1892, at which time William was employed as a Railway Contractor's Timekeeper.

By the turn of the century, the William Mitchell family had moved to Troon, Ayrshire. It was there that Jane Marshall Burnet died on November 11th, 1907, aged 48 years.

William Alexander Mitchell was the only one of this family to have any children. His descendants are: 2 sons, 2 daughters, 9 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.
